Founder President, Indian Union Muslim League (1948-72); born Pettai, District Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu, 5 June 1896; educated at C.M.S. College, Hindu College, St. Joseph College (Tiruchirapalli) and Madras Christian College; businessman; President, Tamilnadu State Muslim League (1945-72); Member:(1) Madras Legislative Assembly and Leader of Opposition 1946-52; (2) Constituent Assembly 1948-50; (3) Rajya Sabha 1952-584) Lok Sabha 1962-72; and (5) A host of other organisations like Madras Port Trust Board; Madras Board of Industries; Madras Excise Licensing Board; Indian Council of Agricultural Research (Hides & Skin section); Industrial Planning Committee; Mica Inquiry Committee; South Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (once Vice-President of the chamber);Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry; Court of Aligarh Muslim University, and others. Started Young Muslim Society in Pettai, 1909; was instrumental in establishing Majlisul-Ulama, 1918; Vice-President Muslim Educational Association of Southern India for over twenty years; Vice President, Anjuman Himayat-e-Islam; Founder-Member of the Tamil Valarchi Kazhagam Madras. Nilkan Perumal writes in his book 'Talented Tamils' that as a member of the Industrial Planning Commission in 1947 and Mica Inquiry Committee, Ismail Saheb displayed deep knowledge of geology, and his work help lead to the finds of mineral treasures in Tamilnadu. He was a leading figure in ushering in educational renaissance among Muslims in the South through establishment of Muslim colleges.Qaid-e-Millat passed away on 4th April 1972 (may his soul rest in peace - Aameen).;
